APON (Ashokti Punorbashon Nibash) serves as a dedicated center aimed at the treatment and recovery of individuals struggling with drug addiction, catering to all age groups. Its journey began in October 1994, initiated by Bro. Ronald Drahozal CSC, under the empowering slogan, "An addict is sick, not bad, not mad." The primary goal was to raise awareness within the community about drug addiction, rehabilitation, and to establish the rights and opportunities for all drug users to embrace a new, healthy life, free from the clutches of drugs.
Continuing its noble mission, APON actively engages in counseling, awareness campaigns, and preventive initiatives. Their hallmark is a well-structured, six-and-a-half-month rehabilitation program, thoughtfully designed for the specific needs of addicts in Bangladesh. Drawing inspiration from the principles of the 12 steps of Narcotics Anonymous and Therapeutic Community, as well as incorporating various related activities, such as group sessions, APON adopts a holistic behavior change approach. This approach addresses not only substance (drug) use but also targets other high-risk behaviors that could lead to HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, Tuberculosis, and other health hazards.
What sets APON apart is its exceptional rehabilitation staff, consisting of APON graduate recovering addicts, alongside nationally and internationally certified drug professionals with years of experience. As positive role models, they provide unwavering support and guidance throughout the recovery process.
The underlying belief of APON is that drug users are integral members of society and communities. Effective interventions against drug abuse in Bangladesh must involve service providers actively engaging with these individuals. The primary purpose of APON is not to turn a "bad" person into a "good" one but to aid the sick in becoming healthy once more.
Since its inception, APON has welcomed over 4000 drug users seeking recovery, along with hundreds more who sought counseling and information either in person or via phone. Additionally, more than 30,000 family members have found support through APON, with many participating in the heartening Friday Family Meetings.
In South Asia, APON stands as the lone organization known to offer long-term treatment and rehabilitation services for male, female, and even underage (minor) drug users, making a profound and lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals seeking a path towards healing and transformation.
