In 1971, Bangladesh achieved its independence after a harrowing struggle that exacted a heavy toll, claiming the lives of millions. The nation paid an immense price to break free from centuries of colonial rule. The ruthless actions of the occupying forces during the war for liberation left the country in ruins. Consequently, the first decade following Bangladesh's independence was marked by numerous challenges. In that somber period, a multitude of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) emerged, each dedicated to missions of alleviating poverty, promoting social welfare, and advancing the overall development of the country. One of these organizations was ASA.
Founded in 1978 by the late Md. Shafiqual Haque Choudhury, a highly educated and visionary individual deeply committed to the country's progress, especially the well-being of the impoverished, ASA embarked on various initiatives aimed at improving the living standards of the poor and fostering a more prosperous society.
In 1991, ASA introduced an innovative microfinance program that brought about a revolutionary transformation in the sector. This microfinance program attained unparalleled success and recognition due to its distinctive features, such as its simplicity, rapid scalability, and cost-efficiency. These qualities propelled ASA to become one of the largest microfinance institutions in the world. In 2007, the renowned Forbes magazine in the United States bestowed upon ASA the title of the top microfinance institution globally.
Today, ASA serves a staggering 7.2 million clients in Bangladesh through its microfinance programs, along with a range of nonfinancial services aimed at alleviating poverty and addressing the vulnerabilities of the underprivileged population. Furthermore, ASA extends its expertise by providing technical assistance to 13 countries in Asia and Africa, contributing to the expansion of financial inclusion—a potent tool in the battle against poverty.
