About Dhaka College

Dhaka College, fondly known as DC, the oldest secular educational institution in Bangladesh. Situated in the charming locality of Dhanmondi, Dhaka 1205, this prestigious college offers a comprehensive higher secondary education (HSC) program. Notably, it is also affiliated with the esteemed University of Dhaka, offering Honours and Master's programs for eager learners.

Let's delve into the fascinating history of this esteemed institution. Dhaka College holds a significant place in Bangladesh's educational landscape, being one of the earliest and most important higher-secondary educational establishments. Its origins can be traced back to 1835 when James Taylor Wise, the civil surgeon at Dhaka, took the initiative to establish an English Seminary School, now known as Dhaka Collegiate School. Working together with the district magistrate Grant, Wise formed a local Committee of Public Instruction, laying the foundation for what would become Dhaka College.

Funded partly by public donations and situated on the grounds of an English factory, the college received its official approval on 18 July 1841. The foundation stone of the college was laid on 20 November 1841, and its construction was completed in 1846, with support from the Bishop of Calcutta. Notably, the first graduating class comprised a diverse student body, with both Muslim and Hindu students, as well as international students hailing mainly from Armenia and Portugal.

Throughout its history, Dhaka College has witnessed several relocations. In 1873, it moved to a spacious building east of Victoria Park to accommodate the burgeoning physics and chemistry laboratories. Later, in 1908, the college found its new home in Curzon Hall, with its science departments occupying the present chemistry building of the University of Dhaka. Additionally, two new halls were constructed at this time.

Further changes occurred in 1921, as the college moved once again, this time to the historic High Court Building, coinciding with the establishment of the University of Dhaka. During the tumultuous period of the Second World War, the college found itself settled in Siddique Bazar in Purana Dhaka. However, it eventually found its permanent and current campus on Mirpur Road, Dhanmondi, near Dhaka New Market in 1955.

Today, Dhaka College stands as a beacon of knowledge and enlightenment, nurturing the minds of countless students and contributing significantly to the educational heritage of Bangladesh. Its long and storied journey reflects a commitment to excellence and the pursuit of knowledge, making it an essential pillar in the nation's educational landscape.
