On the auspicious day of 1st July 1974, the Institute of Modern Languages came into existence. Governed by the 6th Statutes of the Dhaka University Order of 1973, this esteemed Institute operates under the executive and academic authorities of the Syndicate and the Academic Council of the University. Its fundamental objectives encompass a range of pursuits. Firstly, it strives to foster and facilitate the study of Modern Languages. Secondly, it endeavors to impart teaching, training, and guidance to candidates pursuing the Certificate of Proficiency and Diploma of Arts in Modern Languages, as well as other Diplomas and Degrees as approved by the University. Additionally, the Institute extends its services and facilities to cater to the training needs of linguistic scholars, foreign services personnel, and other interested individuals.
Currently, the Institute offers 1-year non-degree courses, each consisting of 120 hours of study, covering a diverse array of languages. These courses are available for foreigners and encompass Bangla (specifically designed for foreign students), Arabic, Chinese, Korean, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Persian, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and Hindi language courses. Moreover, the Institute provides opportunities for advanced study through its M.Phil., Ph.D. programs, and an 18-month MA in ELT (English Language Teaching) program. For those seeking shorter language-focused experiences, the Institute also offers various short courses on different languages.
A testament to its dedication to scholarly advancement, the Institute publishes a research journal annually, providing a platform for the dissemination of knowledge and insights in the field of Modern Languages.
