In 2005, the esteemed Jafflong Tea Company Ltd underwent a significant change as it was acquired by the Orion Group. Nestled in the picturesque locale of Jafflong, under the Gowainghat Upazilla in Sylhet, this unique tea estate holds the distinction of being the sole Flat Land tea plantation in the northeastern region of the country. Its scenic setting lies at the base of the Meghalaya mountain range, close to the Jafflong Tourism Centre and alongside the enchanting Peyain River, which is renowned for its captivating natural beauty.
The vast expanse of the tea estate spans across 875.78 hectares of land, out of which 330.56 hectares are dedicated to tea cultivation. Under the guidance of an efficient and professional management team, the tea estate strives to enhance its harvest and improve the quality of its produce.
Upon taking over from Games Finlay, the company that originally established the tea estate in 1884, numerous development initiatives were undertaken for both the field and the factory. A nursery was set up to nurture tea, shade, and forestry plants, enhancing the overall field development process. Presently, the estate employs around 700 laborers and 14 supervisory staff members, ensuring the smooth functioning of daily operations.
Remarkable improvements have been made to the factory, which now boasts modern machinery, including the Rotarvane, 36" Jumbo 5cut CTC Machine, Continuous Fermentation Machine (CFM), Coal Heater, and VFBD Dryer Shorting Machine with a fully conveyorsed system. Thanks to these advancements, the Jafflong Tea Company produces high-quality black tea, typically sent to the Chittagong tea auction. Over the years, the estate's production has seen steady growth, maintaining global standards. In 2013, the annual production reached an impressive 333,523 kilograms, with projections aiming for 400,000 kilograms in the near future.
Under the wise management and guidance provided by ORION, the company has experienced continued success since the acquisition. Both the production and revenue graphs have shown positive growth each year. This outstanding progress earned Jafflong Tea the prestigious recognition of being categorized as one of the superior quality teas in 2008.
Beyond its commercial success, Jafflong Tea Company is dedicated to contributing significantly to social and community development within its estates. The company's comprehensive labor welfare programs extend essential benefits to its employees, including free housing, healthcare, and more. Moreover, it has taken the initiative to establish and manage medical centers, adult-literacy centers, and schools, ensuring the education of its employees' children and fostering a sense of community well-being.
