About Jahangirnagar University

In 1970, Jahangirnagar University emerged as a distinguished fully residential public institution. Over the years, it has grown to house an impressive array of academic departments, boasting 36 departments and six faculties, alongside four institutes. With an enrollment of more than fifteen thousand students and a dedicated faculty of around five hundred educators committed to both teaching and research, the university has firmly established itself as a hub of higher learning.

This esteemed university is nestled within a picturesque campus, sprawling and captivating, situated approximately 30 kilometers away from the bustling capital city of Dhaka. Thanks to its strategic location, it enjoys excellent connectivity through a well-connected national highway.

The university's formal recognition came in 1973, following approval from the inaugural assembly of Independent Bangladesh, which granted the institution its official Charter. Since then, the university has been operating under this esteemed Charter, guiding its academic pursuits and administrative responsibilities.

Symbolizing the university's identity is its badge, featuring the national flower, the elegant 'white lily' (Lilium candidum). This beautiful flower is portrayed with three delicate petals, bordered by a traditional floral design, beautifully showcasing the university's name in Bangla, artfully encircling it like a garland of flowers.

Found near Dhaka, specifically in Savar, Jahangirnagar University stands proudly as one of the leading higher education institutions in Bangladesh. Noteworthy for its residential setup, the university commenced its formal journey on January 12, 1971, under the guidance of its first chancellor, Rear Admiral S.M. Ahsan, who was then serving as the Governor of East Pakistan.

With the emergence of Bangladesh, the government enacted the Jahangirnagar University Act in 1973, superseding the previous authorization and bestowing upon it the name "Jahangirnagar University." The institution's present form and operation owe their existence to this crucial act, shaping it into the renowned establishment it is today.
