About North South University

North South University (NSU) holds the distinction of being Bangladesh's first private university, its establishment dating back to 1992. The visionaries behind NSU's creation were members of the Foundation for Promotion of Education and Research (FPER), a benevolent and non-political organization, which was later rebranded as the NSU Foundation and is presently known as The North South Foundation for Education and Research. Comprised of esteemed industrialists, education patrons, philanthropists, experienced academics, and senior civil servants, this group shared a dream of establishing a world-class private university that would stand as a paragon of higher education excellence.

During the early 1990s, a significant obstacle presented itself as there were no specific laws in Bangladesh to facilitate the establishment and operation of private universities. Undeterred, the dedicated members of the foundation shouldered the responsibility and worked tirelessly to assist the government in formulating and enacting the necessary legislation—the Private University Act (PUA) of 1992 (later replaced by PUA-2010). Eventually, with the government's approval, NSU was inaugurated on February 10, 1993, marking the beginning of its journey in a modest manner.

In 2012, aligning with PUA-2010 and under the guidance of the Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission, the NSU Foundation formed the NSU Trust. The Trust entrusted the entire management and administration of NSU to its Board of Trustees (BOT), consisting of the same esteemed individuals from the foundation. Notably, the President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh serves as the Chancellor of NSU.

Heading the university's Syndicate is the Vice-Chancellor, who also serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NSU. The Vice-Chancellor is responsible for overseeing administrative and academic affairs, adhering to the guidelines set forth by the BOT and governed by the Private University Act (PUA 2010). Assisting the Vice-Chancellor are the Pro Vice-Chancellor and the Treasurer, all appointed by the Honorable Chancellor based on the BOT's recommendations.

At present, NSU's Vice-Chancellor is Professor Atiqul Islam, who brings a wealth of experience from his prior roles as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engagement) at Edith Crown University in Australia and as the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Government at the University of Canberra. Throughout his esteemed academic career, Professor Atiqul Islam has served at various prestigious institutions globally.

Drawing inspiration from US universities, NSU has adopted academic features such as the semester system, credit hours, and letter grades. Its undergraduate programs, including Economics, Business, and Computer Science, were carefully designed, taking cues from the curricula of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and receiving the stamp of approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh—the highest accrediting authority for higher education in the country.

To ensure a well-rounded education and international perspectives, NSU has formed an International Advisory Board comprising scholars from around the world. This board plays a pivotal role in offering guidance and suggestions for enhancing the university's academic endeavors.

NSU places a strong emphasis on a comprehensive general education curriculum and has developed a strategic plan. Additionally, the university has taken significant steps by implementing student instructional learning assessments for degree programs and courses. Moreover, NSU is actively working on establishing an infrastructure for evaluating institutional effectiveness to secure institutional accreditation.

Through its dedication to academic excellence and innovation, North South University continues to enrich the educational landscape of Bangladesh, leaving an indelible mark on the nation's pursuit of knowledge and learning.
