About Proshika

Proshika Non-Government Organisation emerged immediately after the conclusion of the 1971 liberation war, when forward-thinking individuals recognized the limitations of traditional development approaches. They set out to reshape the landscape of development activities with an innovative perspective. Their vision was to contribute to the reconstruction of the war-torn nation. In pursuit of this vision, they established the Proshika Manobik Unnayan Kendra, which translates to Proshika Center for Human Development. In 1976, they initiated their work in a few villages located in the Dhaka and Comilla districts.

The term "Proshika" itself embodies the organization's core principles, symbolizing the amalgamation of three Bengali words: "proshikkhan" (training), "shikkha" (education), and "kaj" (action).

Proshika envisions a society that is not only economically productive and fair but also socially just, environmentally responsible, and genuinely democratic. The organization's mission revolves around facilitating a comprehensive, inclusive, and participatory approach to sustainable development by empowering the impoverished. Through empowerment, Proshika brings about a transformation in the lives of the underprivileged. It organizes them, increases their awareness of the root causes of their poverty, nurtures leadership from within their ranks, mobilizes their material resources, enhances income and employment opportunities, and builds their capacity to confront natural calamities.

Empowerment goes further to make the impoverished functionally literate, equips them to take charge of their health, involves them in environmental preservation and rejuvenation, encourages their participation in local governance bodies and community organizations, and facilitates their access to public and shared resources.

Proshika's programs encompass a wide spectrum of activities, including the establishment of grassroots organizations for the underprivileged, vocational training, universal education, the promotion of self-sufficiency through income-generating endeavors, access to credit, the development of small-scale enterprises, safeguarding natural resources and environmental revitalization, support for communication, health education, infrastructure development, integrated women's development, policy analysis and advocacy, the preservation of indigenous culture, and leveraging it for mass mobilization in social movements, disaster preparedness, and management, in addition to providing support to other organizations.

Proshika's top-tier management structure comprises a general body composed of 30 members drawn from diverse backgrounds. This general body assumes responsibilities such as appointing auditors, endorsing annual reports and budgets, setting audit fees, and electing a 9-member governing body for the organization. The governing body is re-elected annually from the pool of general body members and plays a pivotal role in policy formulation and progress evaluation. The president of the governing body holds the position of chief executive, assisted by a senior vice-president, a vice-president, directors, and deputy directors.

Currently, Proshika operates through 200 Area Development Centres (ADCs) spanning 24,213 villages and 2,110 urban slums across 59 districts. The organization collaborates with 9,260 women and approximately 5,300 men from economically disadvantaged rural and urban households, who are organized into 110,920 primary groups. Since its inception, Proshika has successfully rehabilitated over 12 million impoverished individuals, both men and women, into various income-generating endeavors. Moreover, more than 1.14 million people have achieved literacy, 168,000 have received healthcare services, and 717,000 children have gained access to primary education with Proshika's active support. The organization has also contributed to the planting of over 10 million saplings under the country's Social Afforestation program.
