It is the head office of one of the old and established NGOs in Bangladesh. It plays an important role for the empowerment of women in Bangladesh. Though it is situated beside the Begum Rokeya Avenue if you have not gone there before, it will be tough for your find the location very easily. Thengamara Mohila Sabuj Sangha, commonly known as TMSS, stands as a prominent non-governmental organization with a strong female leadership at the helm, making significant strides in Bangladesh and the broader South Asian region. Its roots trace back to 1964, but it underwent a transformative reformation in 1980, thanks to the visionary leadership of Prof. Dr. Hosne Ara Begum, an Ashoka Fellow. This rebirth took place in the enchanting locale of Bogura, Bangladesh, a place steeped in historical and cultural significance, harking back to the ancient Pundra Kingdom.
TMSS operates with a singular focus on women's welfare, diligently tackling the multifaceted challenges of poverty. Their mission encompasses empowering women through skill training, providing crucial microcredit support, championing human rights, advocating for social justice, raising awareness through campaigns, addressing climate change and environmental concerns, ensuring disaster preparedness, and advancing health and hygiene standards, including comprehensive WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) system enhancements. Furthermore, TMSS is dedicated to uplifting the socio-economic status and overall livelihoods of the Bangladeshi population, aligning its efforts with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
With a commitment to transparency and accountability, TMSS operates under the purview of 11 government regulatory bodies in Bangladesh. These include the NGO Affairs Bureau, Department of Social Welfare, Ministry of Health Family Welfare, Department of Narcotics Control, Micro-credit Regulatory Authority, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, and Register of Joint Stock Companies, among others.
TMSS's overarching mission is to enhance the quality of life with dignity within families and communities. They achieve this by building the capacity of individuals, fostering adaptability, maximizing the utilization of available resources, actively participating in development initiatives, promoting good governance, and securing the legitimate rights of their constituents on a sustainable basis. Their rallying cry, "Let Family be the Focal Point of Women Development," underscores their commitment to holistic development.
In the present day, TMSS plays a pivotal role in the livelihoods of over 36,000 individuals, both directly and indirectly. Their endeavors ripple out to benefit more than 8 million people, contributing significantly to their well-being and prosperity.
