About University of Dhaka

The University of Dhaka, also known as Dhaka University or simply DU, stands as a distinguished public research institution nestled in the vibrant locale of Shahbag, Dhaka, Bangladesh. With its inception dating back to 1921 under the Dacca University Act 1920 of the Indian Legislative Council, it holds the prestigious title of being the oldest university in Bangladesh and boasts an esteemed reputation as one of Asia's most revered educational institutions.

The university's establishment owes much to the vision of Nawab Bahadur Sir Khwaja Salimullah, who generously donated 600 acres of his estate's land to lay the foundation of this academic bastion. Modeled after British Universities, it has evolved into the largest public research university in Bangladesh, accommodating a thriving student body of 46,150 and a distinguished faculty of 1,992.

DU has etched its mark in the annals of Bangladesh's modern history, playing a pivotal role in shaping the nation's destiny. Following the Partition of India, the university emerged as a beacon of progressive and democratic ideals within Pakistan. Its students and teachers took up the mantle of leadership in advancing Bengali nationalism and spearheading the movement that ultimately led to the independence of Bangladesh in 1971.

The academic prowess of the University of Dhaka has been further exemplified through its association with momentous physics discoveries. Notably, the illustrious Satyendra Nath Bose FRS paved the way for Bose-Einstein statistics and the theory of the Bose-Einstein condensate while at Curzon Hall.

This prestigious institution has produced a myriad of notable alumni who have left indelible marks on various spheres. Among them, the esteemed Muhammad Yunus, recipient of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize and a pioneer in the field of microcredit, stands tall. The university has also nurtured luminaries like Natyaguru Nurul Momen, an influential figure in literature, theatre, and culture, who both studied and taught at DU. Additionally, the likes of Serajul Islam Choudhury, a preeminent public intellectual and writer, and Mohammad Ataul Karim, a distinguished physicist, have adorned DU's roster of notable alumni.

Moreover, DU has witnessed the intellectual growth of eminent figures like Abul Fateh, a founding father of South Asian diplomacy, and Buddhadeb Bose, a renowned Bengali poet from the 20th century. Furthermore, Lotay Tshering, the esteemed Prime Minister of Bhutan, and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh, although not graduates of DU, are still associated with the university in various capacities.

In the realm of international acclaim, the University of Dhaka continues to shine brightly. As of 2023, it claims the highest position among Bangladeshi universities in the QS World University Rankings. Moreover, in the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Rankings of the same year, DU secures a position between 601 and 800, reinforcing its global standing.

In conclusion, the University of Dhaka, with its rich history, illustrious alumni, and academic eminence, remains an unparalleled institution of higher learning in Bangladesh and an esteemed beacon of knowledge in the wider world.
