Anjuman Mufidul Islam was established in 1905 in Calcutta, British India, as a voluntary, non-profit, and non-political social welfare organization. It was founded by Sheth Ibrahim Mohammad Dupley, a prominent businessman and philanthropist from Surat. Over the years, notable figures such as Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Haque, Syed Nawab Ali Choudhury, H. S. Suhrawardy, and Khawja Nazimuddin, among other influential personalities of the 20th century, served as Presidents, providing leadership to the organization.
Following the independence and partition of British India, Anjuman was established in Dhaka in September 1947 as a branch of its Calcutta office. By 1950, it became an independent institution under the leadership of figures like Habibullah Bahar Choudhury, Justice Hamoodur Rahman, and Justice Abdur Rahman Choudhury. From 1993 to 2011, Al-Hajj A. B. M. G Kibria, a former Inspector General of Police, Ambassador, and Advisor to the Caretaker Government (1990–91), served as the organization's President, contributing significantly to its growth and development. He was succeeded by Mr. Md. Shamsul Haque Chishty, a former Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh.
The current President, Mr. Mufleh R Osmany, a former Foreign Secretary and Ambassador, has undertaken the ambitious project of constructing the eighteen-story Anjuman J. R. Tower in Kakrail, which serves as the organization's headquarters. His leadership continues to drive the progress of Anjuman Mufidul Islam.
