Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) stands as the nation's foremost institution for higher agricultural education and research. Its academic pursuits encompass all aspects of agricultural sciences, directly impacting both terrestrial and aquatic productivity. The university's inception took place during the 1961-62 academic session, following recommendations put forth by the Commission of National Education and the Food and Agriculture Commission in 1959. The finalization of BAU's establishment scheme occurred on June 8, 1961, and its ordinance was promulgated on August 18, 1961. Subsequently, with the appointment of its inaugural Vice-Chancellor, the university officially came into being on September 2, 1961, initiating its operations with the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (CVSAH) at Mymensingh as its nucleus.
The primary mission of this esteemed university is to elevate the quality and standard of higher agricultural education while nurturing top-tier agriculturists, agricultural scientists, and researchers who will bear the responsibility of agricultural development in the country. BAU serves as a residential university dedicated to providing higher education and conducting research in agriculture and its various branches. This includes the administration of examinations, the conferral of degrees, and the granting of affiliations.
To realize its objectives, over 90 percent of the recurring budget and the entire development fund are provided by the government through the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Since its establishment in 1961, BAU has been the main source of skilled human capital for advancing modern agriculture in our nation. Nonetheless, it acknowledges the necessity of continued progress. The vision for this University is to evolve into an integrated institution, fostering functional relationships with relevant government organizations, non-governmental organizations, and private sector firms. This integration will enable BAU to make meaningful contributions to the agricultural development of Bangladesh. Guided by three core principles—relevance, quality, and internationalization—BAU aims to respond effectively to the ever-changing global landscape.
The missions of Bangladesh Agricultural University encompass the development of agriculture's art and science for the betterment of humanity. It also includes educating agriculturists to possess high standards of scientific, managerial, and professional competence in harmony with the environment. Moreover, BAU seeks to share its knowledge and skills with international partners, fostering global collaboration and knowledge exchange.
