On March 26, 1972, through Presidential Order No. 27, the Bangladesh Mineral, Oil, and Gas Corporation (BMOGC) was established with the aim of exploring and developing the country's oil, gas, and mineral resources. During the time of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the greatest Bengali of all time and the great architect of independence, another organization named "Bangladesh Mineral Exploration and Development Corporation" (BMEDC) was formed on September 27, 1972, through Presidential Order No. 120, to carry out mineral exploration and development activities in the country. During the tenure of Bangabandhu, the Bangladesh Mineral, Oil, and Gas Corporation (BMOGC) was restructured and renamed as the Bangladesh Oil and Gas Corporation (BOGC). On August 22, 1974, through Presidential Order No. 15, BOGC was given the short name "Petrobangla."
