About International Mother Language Institute (IMLI)

The United Nations' declaration of 21st February as the International Mother Language Day on 17th November 1999 marked an extraordinary milestone not only for the Bangla language but for all mother tongues around the world. During a momentous gathering on 7th December 1999, celebrating this achievement, the esteemed Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, made a groundbreaking announcement. She pledged the establishment of an international institute dedicated to researching and preserving the dignity and rights of both thriving and endangered languages across the globe. This visionary institution would serve to amplify and protect the rich diversity of languages worldwide.

Following her declaration, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of the International Mother Language Institute (IMLI) on 15th March 2001 at 1/ ka Segunbagicha, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The event held great significance, with the presence of the then Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi A. Annan, adding to its prestige.

A significant moment arrived on the Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day in 2010 when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the newly constructed building of the International Mother Language Institute. Since then, the Institute has been diligently pursuing its mission and vision.

The construction of the Institute commenced on 6th April 2003, but it experienced a pause with the change of government, only to resume on 11th February 2008. As of now, six out of the proposed twelve stories have been completed. The official inauguration of the Institute took place on 21st February 2010, symbolically coinciding with the International Mother Language Day.

In recognition of its vital role and contributions, UNESCO bestowed the International Mother Language Institute with Category II Institute status in 2015. This esteemed recognition further highlights the Institute's dedication to its noble cause of promoting and safeguarding the world's linguistic heritage.
